THE aquaculture brancH

Under the "One Health" perspective, to support the sustainable development of aquaculture production for human consumption and improve the global level of aquaculture competencies, WOAH asked WVEPAH to develop a training and certification program for aquaculture health and biosecurity field experts. These experts will receive certification recognizing their ability to work locally at farm level, at watershed level, and regional and national levels.

They will acquire the ability to become key auditors and support farmers for biosecurity, disease management, prevention, surveillance, and product quality. They will also be internationally recognized in the Aquaculture network as trainers for trainers.

The certification is granted by international institutions: Université de Montréal for quality control and academic diploma delivery, and the WOAH for worldwide recognition. Thus, certified professionals are de facto awarded as international experts.

WVEPAH wants to give expert and trainees the tools to identify the limiting factors and bring solutions to the field.

Why a holistic approach is required: Steps to find a solution to the disease:

As long as limiting factors are not mitigated, animals waste energy fighting against adverse conditions, farm performance remains impaired, and ultimately they end up dying.

Mitigating solutions and treatment must be envisaged early.

When mortality rates rise, it is already late, and treatment may be complicated.

Therefore, it is crucial to understand and identify the bottlenecks or limiting factors to restore balance.

Then, preventive measures can be developed.

WVEPAH wants to give experts & trainees the tools to identify the limiting factors and bring solutions to the field.

The direct consequence is that experts must learn about pathogens but also about all the different parameters and factors that are influencing their farming systems, at farm level, at watershed level and at a national and international level.

This is the holistic, or systemic, approach.

In Module I, experts will learn about:
? Biosecurity
o Hygiene
o Pathologies
o Epidemiology and surveillance
o Medication
o Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and its management
? Species, specificity, anatomy & physiology
? Farming structures and environmental conditions
? Feed (nutrition) and feeding
? Farm management and farmers? way of acting with their farm system.
? World Organisation for Animal Health guide and manual
? Postproduction and first transformation.
? and much more!

at farm level, watershed level, national and international levels.

The residential part will include lab visits, field visits and practical work.

Certification program

Module I: General module: Fundamentals of operational farm health management
Online part and
Residential part: Padova, Italy

Module II: Specialized
Different specialized modules are proposed for the participants, and they should choose one of the specialized modules. As aquaculture species are very diverse and distributed in various countries with various climatic conditions, the specialized modules that will be established are:
Health Management and biosecurity in main Mediterranean Aquaculture species
Health Management and Biosecurity in main Asian Aquaculture species
Health Management and biosecurity in main Chinese Aquaculture species
Health management and biosecurity in main cold water Aquaculture species in Norway, Canada, Chile, Russia, Tasmania?
Health Management and biosecurity main African aquaculture species
Health Management and biosecurity in main warmwater species in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Cas cliniques
25 Clinical cases or 4 in-depth farm audits with audit referential, farm visits and further lab analysis (if any), audit reports and a PowerPoint presentation of audit and conclusions that would be presented to the farm owner or any other top management member or official.

Time frame: 5 years maximum

The latter is described under ?Study Programs?.
